After his parents separated, he moved to Bettendorf, Iowa with his father and brother, and under his brother’s influence, he became involved in several sports like basketball, football and baseball, and eventually he also learned Taekwondo. Later he attended Bettendorf High School and involved himself in wrestling and football.

When Lawler turned 16, he met Pat Miletich, a trainer who used to bring his students to Bettendorf High School during wrestling practice. Upon graduation, Lawler forewent college and joined Miletich’s training under Miletich Fighting Systems.

In 2001, Lawler officially joined UFC, winning against Aaron Riley in his first fight.
