Bills quarterback Josh Allen added another layer of confusion to the Stefon Diggs no-show fiasco.
Without Diggs at Bills camp, Allen seemed to suggest the reason behind the star wide receiver’s absence was unrelated to football.
“I know internally we’re working on some things. Not football-related, but Stef, he’s my guy,” Allen said on Tuesday, according to Albert Breer. “Excuse my…I f–king love him. He’s a brother of mine. This does not work, what we’re doing here, without him.”
Diggs was not in attendance on the first day of the Bills’ mandatory minicamp and, according to The Athletic, could face $100,000 in fines if he misses the entire week.
Myron Flowers, Diggs’ trainer, said there’s frustration between Diggs and the team but recommended that he attend minicamp anyway.
“Because of the level of frustration and not knowing, I think it’d be good that he’s there [at minicamp] and they open up a conversation on what the plan is,” Flowers said, according to Fox Sports.
Flowers also said Diggs’ primary focus is winning a Super Bowl, and he feels Buffalo “took a step back” last season after losing to the Bengals in the AFC divisional round.
For his part, Diggs caught 108 passes for 1,429 yards with 11 touchdowns during the 2022 season.
Diggs, 29, inked a four-year, $96 million extension with the Bills last offseason, but his disappearing act has some wondering if he’s itching to be on the trade block.
If Buffalo tried to move on from the star wideout, a trade of Diggs would make for a big dead cap hit for Buffalo, which would have to pay $13.2 million this season, according to ESPN.
Allen posited that there has been a “communication” issue that has exacerbated the drama.
“There are some things that could’ve gone better last year,” Allen added, according to Bills beat reporter Sal Capaccio. “I think as an organization maybe we’re not communicating the right way.”
Diggs, a three-time Pro Bowler, has totaled over 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last five seasons, including an NFL-best 1,535 yards in 2020.
