Michael grew up in a family of four siblings; his brothers Robert and Eric are also successful poker players, and he has one more brother, Daniel Jay. Michael is of Iraqi Jewish ancestry, through his father, Ezra Mizrachi, and while growing up he became fluent in the Hebrew language.

Following his high school matriculation, Michael started studying to become a doctor, however, he dropped out of college once his poker career started turning for the better.

Beginning in 2005 he was more and more successful, and tied the record for seven money finishes in a single year. Also, the same year he won the first prize of $1,859,909 at the LA Poker Classic, defeating a final table including Ted Forrest and Erick Lindgren, while he was also fifth in the World Poker Tour (WPT) World Poker Open at a table also featuring Daniel Negreanu and Scotty Nguyen. The next year he won the Card Player Magazine’s Player of the Year Award, and in 2008 he was quite successful at the World Series of Poker, as he was third for the #10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha World Championship. Two years later, Michael won the bracelet in The Poker Player’s Championship, as he bettered Vladimir Shchemelev, and took home the prize of $1,559,046, which certainly increased his wealth. The same year, he won $2,332,992 at the November Nine in the Main Event, then in 2011 secured his second bracelet, as he won against Shawn Buchanan in heads-up play and received €336,008, further increasing his wealth.
